Rain in Fort Wayne

by Thomas Anderson

from the album Beyond That Point

Head poundin', white face, eyes blood red,

Room still spinnin' 'round her motel bed;

Loverboy wham bam thank you ma'am gone,

And the trucks gun their engines in the light of dawn.

Chill in the air cuts straight to the bone,

You call the office and the kids back home;

Canadian cold front crawlin' 'cross the nation,

Wonderin' how you ended up in this situation.

Rain in Fort Wayne, snow in Colorado,

Don't even ask about the wind chill factor;

They shut down Kansas City and they shut down O'Hare,

And the blizzard's blowin' eastward -- you can feel it in the air,

So you stare -- in the mirror you stare.

Didn't used to hurt like this early in the morning,

What used to be a promise now seems like a warning;

And all the 'How'd you end up here's' ringin' in your ears,

And all the opportunities that somehow disappeared.

Last flight leavin' in the low gray clouds,

Stranded in the terminal alone in the crowd;

North wind howlin: it's startin' in to sleetin:

All the snow plows in the world won't get your heart beatin'.

Rain in Fort Wayne....

Better take out some life insurance

Baby if that last occurrence

Is any indication

Of our final destination

My own personal opinion

Is that Fortune and its minions

Have let the wings get icy

'Til our situation's dicey

With Robert Stack and Karen Black

Across the aisle and two rows back

I'd say it doesn't bode well

Like we're in a flying hotel

I used to fly the friendly skies

That I saw shining in your eyes

And all the clouds were far below

In the sweet days of long ago

Rain in Fort Wayne

Snow in Colorado

Are you looking for love

Or chasin' your shadow

Are you lookin' for love

Or ditchin' in the ocean

Are you walking on clouds

Or goin' through the motions

Rain in Fort Wayne

Snow in Colorado

Looks like we somehow lost

Contact with the tower

Rain in Fort Wayne

Snow in Colorado

Rain in Fort Wayne

Snow in Colorado.
